Craig Johnston is buzzing with
excitement. His two great loves –
Australia and Liverpool Football
Club – have been reunited.
Having witnessed 95,000
supporters paint Melbourne red two
years ago, the 55-year-old was
among the passionate 50,000-
strong crowd at Suncorp Stadium
for the 2-1 victory over Brisbane
Roar in Queensland on Friday night.
And on Monday he will take his seat
at the packed Adelaide Oval as
South Australia pays homage to
Brendan Rodgers ’ men.
The importance of Johnston to the
huge popularity Liverpool command
Down Under can’t be overstated.
The man nicknamed ‘Skippy’ during
his seven-year spell at Anfield was
a trailblazer for Australian football.
Born in South Africa, he grew up in
New South Wales before heading for
England as a teenager to follow his
dreams.
Having ignored Jack Charlton’s
advice to jump on the next plane
home after his first trial game for
Middlesbrough, he stayed put and
earned himself a contract.
